Summer Festival Top Tips

At the start of June my lovely friend Sarah invited me along to Field Day, at which Superdry would kindly be hosting us for the day. We had such a blast and got to listen to some amazing live music from Nao and Mr Jukes, who are one of my new favourites.

Summer is music festival season here in the UK, so if you happen to be heading to one this summer I thought I’d share some of my festival top tips. These tips of course could be used for festivals outside of the UK but as the weather is so unpredictable here you may not need to follow some of these if you’re guaranteed sunshine.

Take a umbrella / rain coat, pac-a-mac. It may seem a little crazy to carry one of these with you, but especially if you’re going to a weekend festival in the UK, there’s never going to be a guarantee of no rain. You’ll be glad you packed it when you’re huddling for shelter in a giant tent or teepee. If you have a pac-mac at least you’ll be happier embracing the rain.

Try something new from one of the street food vendors. The food vendors at festivals are usually independent and I always love to try somewhere I haven’t tried before. And it means that you and your friends can have different cuisines and all eat together. At field day Sarah had vegan burritos & I had a burger, we then shared Vegan donut holes from my fave Vicky’s Donuts! They were absolutely heavenly!!

Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be on your feet for the majority of the day/weekend so you’re going to want to pace yourself and be comfy so you can dance, jump and enjoy yourself.

Take sunglasses with you. Seems an obvious one, but remember to take them! I have been to day festivals again and again with friends and one of us has forgotten a pair and you spend your entire afternoon squinting and not being able to catch a glimpse of who’s on stage, or people watch/outfit spot (which is always so amazing to do at a festival and there is always such an abundance of different people and amazing looks).

For photos take your phone or a disposable camera. Whilst I couldn’t be without my SLR camera anywhere I go, I’d definitely advise a smaller camera to carry around or even your phone and a film/disposable camera. You’d get some great shots on both and best of all you’d really enjoy yourself and immerse yourself in the experience. I like the idea of a weekend festival being like a mini digital detox. Especially when shooting film you can’t see the photos immediately and when you get them developed it’s a treat to see what you captured and reminisce about the memories created.

Hopefully some of these tips will come in handy next time you’re off to a festival. I’d like to say a massive thank you to Sarah for asking me along and to Superdry for having us at Field day, having access to their back stage area was such a luxury! Somewhere for us to relax and chill whilst still feeling like we were in the buzz of the festival between acts.
